The U.S. Postal Service’s latest in the continuing “Legends of Hollywood” series of U.S. postage stamps will focus on directors and the first is appropriately dedicated to John Ford. Along with Ford, Frank Capra, John Huston and Billy Wilder are being so honored. The Great Film Directors philatelic commemoration will debut May 23, 2012.
The illustration selected for Ford’s stamp is composed of an image on the left capturing John Wayne with his back turned as he walks away in the iconic finale of The Searchers, with a portrait of Ford on the right. A full-size version of the stamp artwork can be viewed here (stamp photo, U.S. Postal Service). Ford and Wayne fans should find plenty of reasons to “write home” in lieu of emails.
There is something apt about Ford receiving a “forever” stamp, one that will always be equal in value to current First Class postage rates. Like his films it will be timeless…and it’s about time.

Frank Capra’s classic romantic comedy It Happened One Night (1934), for which he won his third Oscar for best director, is represented on the stamp by an illustration of Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert from the film’s famous “hitchhiking” scene. For more, go here.

The third director to receive a stamp in the series will be John Huston, according to the Associated Press. Featured in the stamp’s image is Humphrey Bogart holding The Maltese Falcon (1941). Bogart made five pictures directed by Huston.
The fourth and final director to be honored with a U.S. Postage stamp is Billy Wilder. His stamp features an illustration of Marilyn Monroe as “Sugar Kane” with her eukulele in Wilder’s popular comedy, Some Like it Hot (1959).

Thank you for your comment. I admit I’m curious who your friend’s father was. I hope he likes it.
